Kindergarten Units of Study


In kindergarten, literacy (reading and writing) will be integrated with science and social studies. Below, is what your child will be learning this school year. Please understand that learning is flexible and times might changes a little throughout our journey.


Trimester 1 (ends Nov. 10)
SS - Reasons for Rules (using the words so & because)
Sci - How the Sun Affects the Earth/Trees and Weather
Art - Shadows and more (pencils, solar paper)
Math - Counts to 20+, counts 10+ objects, compare numbers, writes numbers, number ID, shapes 2D & 3D
Reading - rhyme, syllables, beginning sounds, letter sounds, letter ID, points/tracks   *KB reading groups start around the beginning of Dec.*
Writing - writes name, draws detailed picture (top, middle, bottom), dictates on topic, handwriting practice, sound out words

Trimester 2 (ends Feb.23)
SS - Needs and Wants
Sci - Balls and Ramps
Art - ball art and more (tempra paint)
Math - Counts to 50+, counts 20+ objects, teens, partners (adding and subtracting eg: 1+5 = 6, 2+4=6, 3+3=6), shapes 2D & 3d
Reading - cvc reading, use reading strategies, blend, questioning , segmenting, retell
Writing - spaces, sentences, spelling, on topic, detailed picture matches words/writing/dictation

Trimester 3 (ends May 25)
SS - People Around the World and Their Environments (Front Range, Arctic, Desert, Rain Forest)
Sci - Animals 2 x 2 (comparing animals, learning about animals and their environments)
Art - Environment paper dolls and more (water colors)
Math - counts to 100 by 1s, 5s, 10s, word/story problems,  teens, fluently add & subtract, data and measurement (compare, graph, measure, sort)
Reading - all kinder sight words, retelling, strategies, questioning

Writing - capitals, spaces, sentences (3+ beginning, middle, end), spelling, punctuation, on topic, detailed picture matches words/writing/dictation


1. Reasons for Rules
Task: After listening to multiple texts on rules draw, dictate, or write a  sentence in which you explain why we have rules. Support your response with evidence from the text/s.

2. How the Sun Affects the Earth/Trees and Weather
Task: After reading and conducting various scientific investigations about the effect of the sun on the earth, create an informative model of the sun in which you explain at least three ways the sun affects the earth. Support your response with evidence from the text/s.




Task: After reading and conducting various scientific investigations about trees and leaves, communicate observations made about different kinds of trees, leaves, and weather conditions through dictating, writing, and drawing in a research booklet. Support your response with evidence from the text/s.

3. Needs and Wants
Task: After reading and listening to a variety of texts in making decisions based on needs and wants, write, draw, and/or dictate an information poster in which you explain how these choices are made. Support your response with evidence from the text/s.

4. Balls and Ramps
Task: After reading and conducting various scientific investigations about balls and ramps, create a model of 3 types of ramps and record how they move.

5. People Around the World and Their Environments
Task: After reading and researching informational text/s on how people live in different environments around the world, write, draw and dictate an informational report in which you compare food, shelter, and clothing and how they change in different environments. Support your response with evidence from the text/s.

6. Animals 2X2
Task: After reading and researching informational text/s on animals, choose 2 animals to create a comparing and contrasting project on.
