Grandparents Day 2018

In class, we read How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan and Grandma Loves You! by Helen Foster James. In the book, How to Babysit a Grandpa, one pages shares tips for taking Grandpa for a walk:

  •      Step over sidewalk cracks.
  •      Look for lizards, cool rocks, and dandelion puffs.
  •      If there's a puddle or a sprinkler, show him what to do.
We used the 3rd tip as inspiration for our art work. Yesterday, students posed for pictures, glued those pictures to white paper, and added an umbrella and rain boots to their pictures. They colored the boots and umbrellas with oil pastels. Students watercolored the background and puddles in their pictures with grandparents here today.

Today in kindergarten, we listened to the story ABC, Can You Find Me? by Jakki Tauer. Read Aloud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bflvEDtaaNg After listening to the story, we discussed one of the pages in depth. The page read, "A pretty picture for you to view. Can you find all the U's?" We discussed words that have the letter U in them. Each student selected a word, chose to have their art portrait or landscape, and drew a large outline for their word with a Sharpie. Then, they colored in their picture with oil pastels. Finally, they used friction (Our current science unit integrated well.) to roll out the letter U's with modeling clay. The U's were hidden in their picture. Each child went to the board, counted their U's and identified how many tens and ones were in their number (Our current math unit integrated wonderfully too!).
